So I read this really interesting article from Reader’s Digest that was a refreshing take on weight loss. Most of the articles that you read tell you the same things you hear everywhere - you know, exercise 3 times a week, eat less, blah, blah, blah - any idiot knows that. I thought I would share with you some of the points that I found interesting from the article. BTW, if you haven’t picked up a Reader’s Digest in a while, I would recommend doing so, I had forgotten how entertaining they are.
- Sleep More, Lose More: University of Chicago researchers reported that sleep deprivation upsets our hormone balance, triggering both a decrease in leptin (which helps you feel full) and an increase of ghrelin (which triggers hunger). As a result, we think we’re hungry even though we aren’t—and so we eat. Indeed, sleep may be the cheapest and easiest obesity treatment there is.
- Cookies (or CHOCOLATE) really are additictive: When subjects at Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia were shown the names of foods they liked, the parts of the brain that got excited were the same parts activated in drug addicts. It may have to do with dopamine, the hormone linked to motivation and pleasure (I kid you not, I have literally closed my eyes in happiness before from biting into a Krispy Kreme doughnut)
- All the Same Diet: Amid all the new diet fads, each diet acknowledges that there are really four basic rules to healthy eating:
- Consume carbs in the form of whole grains and fiber.
- Avoid trans fats and saturated fats.
- Eat lean protein.
- Fill up on fruits and vegetables.
These points are really the most relevant to me, here is the entire article, so you can pick the ones most relevant to you: http://www.rd.com/living-healthy/13-things-you-never-knew-about-your-weight/article108186-1.html
Or pick up the hard copy for heaven’s sakes!
Not that kinda gal...
Me: I am so hungryJen: I know, me too!
Me: Do you want these pumpkin seeds I bought, I don't like them.
Jen: Oh, no thanks. I'm not a big "seed person."
